EWSETA and SAWEA collaborate to grow skills in the Wind Sector
Wind is a central energy source to SA’s Energy Mix accounting for 21% as per the IRP 2019. According to a REIPPPP Focus on Wind Report in December 2021, 31 wind projects had reached commercial operations and have reported 4 172 job years for SA Citizens. The potential in this sector for job growth is immense and that is why EWSETA has placed focus on ensuring that young people who have a desire to follow a career in the wind sector, have access to skills development opportunities.
In 2022, EWSETA signed an agreement with SAWEA for a Wind Industry Internship Programme (WIIP) and 2023 will see the second roll-out of this successful programme. WIIP is expected to place 35 interns, selected from over 90 applications, this year. These interns are being placed across approximately 30 renewable energy companies – illustrating a growth of over 100% in just one year.
