Call for South Africans to clean rivers this Mandela Month.

Department of Water and Sanitation Calls on South Africans to clean up Rivers

Each year, during the month of July, governments, organisations and individuals from all walks of life around the world celebrate Mandela Month and on 18 July, we celebrate the birthday of this great man. The theme for Mandela Month 2020 is “Action Against Poverty” and the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) will be embarking on a month long Clear Rivers campaign in July 2020.

When rivers run dry, it reminds all of us that water does not come from the tap and it is for this reason that government, business and civil society initiated the Clear Rivers campaign in 2016. The campaign calls on everyone to dedicate their ‘67 minutes’ towards cleaning up streams, wetlands, dams, canals or any other freshwater source.

Everyone is encouraged to participate in cleaning up the water ecosystems  on any day during Mandela Month.
